is there a certain album that you own that just makes you feel a hell of a lot better?
for me, it's cinderella's "still climbing" album.
it's about life in general, about how it sucks, but you gotta make it work for yourself.

Philip Glass. ( New Age Music) I am not allowed to listen to him in the house--my wife is not a fan. His album "Songs from Liquid Days" from 1985 transports me to another time and place. Most of his older recordings are difficult to come by. His music is definately mood altering.
His cassete tapes of Mishima, 1000 Aeroplanes on the roof, and The Photographer, I listened to until I wore them out. Unfortunately I cannot replace them.

I am 48 years old and had been raised in the "Truth". I faded out 20 years ago. I never heard of the film. I grew up in one of those "Theocratic" families ( elders, pioneers, etc) with many conncections to Bethel.
I do believe that once we leave the JW set of beliefs; based on my experience, we need a new support network of friends. Bitter? Yes, some people are and with very good reason. I am the first one to admonish keeping a positive mental attitude in rebuilding our lives. However, that must be very hard to do for some who look back and see a wasted life.
Ultimately, I do believe our lives are what we make of them.
i've got the first part of my state certification this morning...a three hour exam covering the last month and a half of training on state law, the judicial system, case practice, interventions, indicators of maltreatment and abuse et cetera and i've got anxiety out the wazoo (btw, does anyone know what a wazoo is??).
i have to pass this in order to keep my job and i've heard that it's pretty difficult, so i'm stressing just a wee bit.
i'm thinking the gallon of coffee i've already had this morning may not have been such a good idea??

being a jw has affected our life.
I am happy and content with my life now. My mind is open and tolerant of other opinions; ways of life and differing perspectives. The global villiage is big enough for ALL of us. ( yes, including our JW friends)
I think for myself and make my OWN decisions. I also feel I am a part of the greater world and culture around me and that feels great! I like to think that I can contribute something to society.
when i was going door to door, i liked talking about the signs of the end, earthquakes, wars, and all the signs that jesus gave.
i liked talking about how the world was doomed and that only the kingdom would set things straight.
what did you like talking about going door to door?
In hindsight, I realize that I must have been a nosy kid going door to door. I was more interested in the house, architecture and landscaping of it than the householder. If I liked what I saw I always managed to work it into the conversation. Suprisingly, most people were very eager to talk about their houses. It was a great icebreaker. The spiritual message I was carrying seems so boring now.
now, i'm not referring to sesame street, mr. rogers, or any of the educational kids' shows.
i'm talking about the ones for pure entertainment, cartoons and such.
however, i can't really classify this as purely cartoons since some of you might have watched things like hr pufnstuf.. i grew up in the 1980s, when the magic of saturday morning cartoons existed.

how could a nice little JW girl watch Bewitched and I dream of Jeannie? I was not allowed to as they were considered "demonic". I was also not allowed to watch a daytime soap opera ( all the kids at school watched it everyday and talked eagerly about it---kids love to be spooked) called " Dark Shadows" about a haunted New England family and their haunted house, as we were told that the demons could come thru the TV and "get us".
I did however, catch Bewitched and Jeannie years later on the rerun circuit and thought that they were great!
No demons every got me ( or did they?) . They evidently got you too!

they found the body of little carlie from sarassota, fl.. my heart goes out to her family.
hopefully justice will be served swiftly since they already have the suspect.
i am sooooo sad.
I have a 12 year old daughter and this case was difficult to hear.
My sympathies go out to her poor mother and father. There cannot possibly be any comfort.
My wife and I have lectured my daughter continually about strangers. And particularly take note of the video surveillance, as I told my daughter, this girl was old enough to know to be aware of strangers. She did not seem to resist him and one wonders what he told her to be so convincing. STAY AWAY from strangers and stay where there are people. We do not want to be over protective but feel we must educate her about the real world. Despite trying to shelter them from this type of thing, they must grow up and learn.
As parents, we do not want our kids to be neurotic about life, or there fellow human beings. However, they must be made aware at some reasonable age that there really are forces out there in life that can and do mean them harm. It is fine line to define.
This man should be given over to the "angry" public for humiliation and public execution for his heinous crime, as should every child abductor and murder.
I also mourn for his wife and children as their lives will also never be the same. They are also victims.

as a kid my favorite was "Astro Boy"( cartoon) and "Lost in Space" the tv series ( mid 60s)
In the 1980s, before my kids were born, I used to like to watch Pee Wee Hermans Playhouse, only through the opening credits of Cyndi Lauper singing. I never really watched the show; just liked to hear Cyndi sing. Her song for this show has been forever immortalized in the Steven Spielberg movie "The Goonies".
when i was 9 years old, my parents and i moved from anaheim, california to st. croix, u.s. virgin islands.
this was in 1965 (you do the math.
our daughter jennie's best friend, who is 9 years old, is moving to japan.

This may be an opportunity for your daughter to GO VISIT her best friend in a foreign culture. What a great experience that will be. Her friend will adjust, no doubt as an Westerner abroad, and will most likely go to a Western school. Since she has family there; she will be accepted.Especially Japan where I hear they are culture driven like the French. Family is important.
Growing up on Long Island, my best friend in the congregation was a boy from a family originaly from Oregon. They moved into our congregation from Singapore, having lived all over South East Asia. To me, they were so cosmopolitan and glamorous. His Dad worked for an oil company and they moved frequently. I was a pioneer and was asked to "encourage" him. We became good friends and his families international experiences influenced me greatly. I think of the friendship to this day, ( however, they are still active witnesses and I am not).
I think this may be an opportunity for your daughter to be exposed to an exciting foreign experience!
